The road to the Portal was paved with danger, sacrifice, and loss. Seven horses perished—attacked by jaguars, felled by snakebite, poisoned, even struck by lightning. More than 500 truckloads of equipment were hauled across the unforgiving Costa Rican jungle, through mud and mountains, and finally by oxen and packhorses into the unknown.
This wasn’t a fictional expedition—it cost nearly a million dollars and lives were lost. What we found in that hidden chapel was not just mysterious... it was dangerous.
Here in the mountains and jungle of Costa Rica I'm off the radar with no umbilical cord to anything, no cell phone, no internet, no TV, no longer any bank accounts or plastic, no driving licenses, no facial recognition. My water supply comes from mountain springs and I generate my own electricity.
A man who doesn't really exist in the world of today. A harmless old man in well worn kit, living life in the simplest mode in the jungle, not leaving in the past 8 years even to the nearest village.

There are a thousand acres (400 hectares) of mostly primary forest and close to 100 waterfalls amid some of the ancient giants of trees. At elevation 4,850 feet (1450 meters) the climate is pleasant.
